Cat Scratchers versus Furniture

I think the title will say it all. Which would you choose? A lot of people see their cats as absolute angels who let their kitties do anything they please in with the household furniture. I would step into their house and see peeled sofas, artistically separated drapes, pet signatures on authentic wooden stuff and the classic shredded curtains. Looks good to you? I don’t thin so either! In this article I want to make the emphasis on the importance of using cat scratchers, scratching tree posts and other similar accesories in rearing one’s pet in not only providing protection from the other stuff found in your house, but provides a lot of fun, convenience, look and well-being for your cat as well.

I have been a cat owner for nearly 2 years how. I own a male half-breed Persian cat named Crumpet. Now when I first got him, all I had was a feeding bowl, cat litter trays religiously scooped a few times daily and lots of my love to give him. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough – in particular for my black synthetic leather sofas, my bean bags, my thick curtains, by bed and my pillows which were losing value quickly from all the recreation marks Crumpet has been leaving on them. Well at first I thought it was cute and thus I gently tried to discipline Crumpet, while my husband was doing the not-so-gentle stuff. While he was writhing in agony from all the value we are losing, I decided to research on cat scratchers and scratching tree posts.

I found out that there really is little you can do about the cat’s scratching behavior. In fact, it is actually important for your kitty do be going about his kind of behavior as it shows that its well being is in check. They do this out of instinct – mainly for the need to strengthen their arms and to sharpen and wear down their claws. In nature, cats are hunters, tree climbers, territorial fighters and such and thus even in a domesticated setting, some of these things are necessary for your pet to thrive.

It makes perfect sense then, to not limit or control this behavior because it is a “cat” thing. But you don’t have to sacrifice your furniture for it, in fact you just have to buy new ones in the form of cat scratchers and scratching tree posts. These things are actualy very nice to look at – as they come in different shapes, sizes, themes and the like. The common thing is that they are scratchable, in many cases climbable and in some cases even sleepable! Thus, not only does it give protection for your furniture – it makes the ambience look better and at the same time provides well being for your pet cat. I see Crumpet having his fun with one of these things almost daily. And yes, my (newly bought) furniture is almost safe from being victimized like before and my husband and I are very pleased with this.

New Kitten Preparations

When you are bringing home a new kitten it is very exciting and challenging all at the same time. However, you will need to get ready for your new visitor. New kitten preparations are essential for you and your entire family as you both of you will need to get acquainted. This article will cover what kitten supplies you will need, facts about losing baby teeth and vaccination shot times.

Kitten Supplies Needed

• Collar and tag even if it stays indoors
• Covered litter box and litter
• Scooper
• Comb and brush
• Toys (to help in developing strength and agility)
• Dried treats for rewards
• Healthy and well-balanced kitten food
• Ceramic or steel water and food bowls
• Cozy bed
• Nail trimmer
• Scratching post or floor scratcher
• Harness or leash (if your local laws require one when taking your kitten outside for a walk)

The above are just some of the basic supplies you will need to get before you bring home your new kitten. One more thing, be sure to settle on the place where your cat will eat and sleep. Also, settle on your veterinarian. This is critical. You need to know your vet and location in the event of an emergency.

Losing Their Baby Teeth

Just like humans, kittens will loose their baby teeth. They have two sets of teeth—baby teeth known as milk teeth and adult teeth. The kitten’s first set of teeth begin to appear at about four weeks old and will be ready to chew soft foods. When all the baby teeth are grown, there will be 26 sharp teeth.

After a few months, the kitten’s baby teeth will begin to fall out. This is to make room for the stronger permanent adult teeth. This process is called teething and can be painful as the kitten’s gums may be sore for a while. After about eight or nine months, the teething process will be over and your pet will be crunching down its kibble with thirty bright and sharp teeth.

Kitten Shots/Vaccinations

After you bring home your new kitten, you will have to prepare him to get its shots. The vaccination shots will be determined by your local laws and state where you live and these laws will vary from state to state. Your veterinarian will know what shots are required for your pet and at what age. Your kitten will begin a series of shots when he is between six to eight weeks old. Some of these areas are:

• Rabies
• Respiratory infections
• Panleukopenia or distemper
• Feline leukemia

Here are some possible times when your kitten will start receiving shots depending upon where you live:

• Upper respiratory disease – 6 to 8 weeks old
• Feline leukemia — 10 weeks old
• Distemper – 6 to 8 week old
• Pneumonitis – 6 to 10 weeks old
• Rabies – 12 to 16 weeks old
• Viral Rhinotrachetis – 8 to 10 weeks old= 

Booster vaccinations for the above shots are in twelve month intervals accept for rabies. Booster shots for rabies can be up to 36 months depending upon your local laws and your veterinarian.
