Toilet Training Your Cat in Two Quick Lessons

Practically anybody who owned a house cat is aware what a pain it is, to take care of a kitty litterbox and sanitize it every day. And so many owners of indoor kittys do know what an even more unnerving chore it is when the kitty doesn’t take the litter box! Well, there are those among us always dreaming of greater things and do not care to learn more about litter box cleaning. For these cat owners, there is good news now. Indeed, believe it or not, it is not a big thing to train kitties, to use a real toilet. When you are toilet training your kitty, you will teach it to to do business on the toilet instead of using the litter box. In case this sounds too good to be true, temper your imagination a bit with the recognition that you will still have to flush the toilet for your kitty.

1. Relocating Your Kitty’s Litter Box

Just in case that your cat’s litter box is not already in the bathroom, you will need to place it there. The cat box should be near the toilet on the ground for some time. After severals days you will raise the litter box up some inches making sure that it is sitting very stable. If you have no appropriate furniture to secure the box, you could use books if they are stacked in a stable fashion. Of course it is the goal, to reach the point where the rim of the cat litter box and the toilet bowl are on the same level. Only then you want to put a sturdy aluminum pan over the toilet bowl in a way that will allow it to support your cat steadyly as you begin the toilet training with your cat. Limit the amount of cat litter at this time to less than an inch across the surface of the pan.

2. Getting your Cat Accustomed to the new Toilet

When you have taken away the litter box and have the cat using the pan only, you are ready to start the last part of toilet training of your cat. You can begin the training by poking some holes in the bottom of one side of the pan. Of course, you better reduce the cat litter so that it doesn’t leave through the toilet. Plus, you should consider using flushable kitty litter at this point. The holes will force the kitty to put its front paws on the toilet seat when it potties. After your kitty has been doing this for some days, you can put holes on the other side of the pan and that the kitty can stand entirely on the toilet seat. The critical part of the toilet training instructions is that after your kitty has been doing this with success for a quite some time, you have to completely take away the pan. If you have been successful with the cat toilet training, your kitty will from now on take the toilet you are using, too!

A Final Info on Toilet Training your Cat

These 2 steps may last as long as two or three months with a narrow minded, older cat. So be patient with your cat. Always remember a wet environment isn’t exactly what cats are usually comfortable around. Don’t stop if your cat does not want to use the new toilet every time it has to go. Don’t throw away your pan in case your cat is against it or is just not in the mood using this toilet. Put the pan back again on the toilet seat and the cat can re-learn to take the toilet again quite fast. The rewards of toilet training your cat are many.
