How To Cure Your Eczema By Avoiding Common Trigger Factors

Although the common view is that there isn’s a cure for eczema, the symptoms can be held at bay by avoid the trigger factors. It’s difficult to know exactly what triggers off a flare-up of eczema, but since some types are caused by contact with a specific allergen or irritant, it would be prudent to avoid these.

Here we will discuss the common eczema trigger factors together with tips on how to avoid them.

House Dust Mites

These pesky little mites are so tiny that they cannot be seen by the naked eye. They can hide in your mattresses, soft toys, cushions, carpets and furniture, in fact anywhere that dust settles. It’s important to keep your house well-ventilated because dust mites thrive in moist and damp environments. The next thing to do is to either avoid having furry toys and cushions, especially in your child’s bedroom as these tend to trap dust.

Try and air your mattresses as much as you can, if possible out in the sun as this kills the dust mites off. You can buy mattresses that are mold and dust mite resistant. Finally, a good idea would be to get rid of carpets and replace them with easier to clean wooden floors. Let’s talk about bedding. Since dust mites hate hot temperatures, use a high temperature wash as this will kill them off. Dry the bedding in a dryer at a high temperature or hang it outside to dry in the sun. Make sure that you don’t let any damp bedding hang around the house for too long as this will attract dust mites.

Clothing

If you suffer with eczema then you really want to make sure that you do not wear abrasive or scratching fabrics, like wool, next you your skin as this can cause irritation. It’s always advisable to wear breathable fabrics, e.g. 100% cotton or other smooth materials next your skin. A new fabric called Derma Smart, made of microfiber, has been created by dermatologists recently. It’s supposed to glide over the skin’s surface and relieve itchiness. My tip for washing clothes is to use a non-biological liquid laundry products as this doesn’t contain irritating enzymes or bleaches.

Pets

As much as it is wonderful to have a cat and a dog in the house with children, quite often you can react to their fur and dander with symptoms such as wheezing, sneezing and a runny nose. In fact, susceptible people have an increased risk of developing eczema after coming into contact with furry animals. The best thing to do is to not have a furry animal in the house, but if you do have one then try and keep it away from your child as much as possible. If you or your child happen to come in contact with a furry animal then make sure you wash your hands immediately.
